We drove out to this Texas Hill Country Beltane Wedding on an overcast May 1st. If you’re wondering what Beltane is, it’s a Pagan holiday that celebrates the peak of Spring and the coming of Summer. This is typically celebrated on May 1st and modern pagans celebrate in various ways. Beltane also sometimes goes by the name maypole and is a holiday associated with fertility. This holiday is commemorated with bonfires, dancing, maypoles, and rituals. The Celtic word of Beltane means “fires of bel” and is referred as the Celtic Sun God Belenus. This is a short recap of what Beltane is but you can look into this further if this interests you!
Justin and Allyson were thoughtful and intentional as they thoroughly planned these events for their wedding. You could see it in the details surrounding everything. We arrived driving down a long dirt road with a surprise to this stunning private location. We were stunned by the views overlooking the Texas hill country as we scoped the property out. Justin was preparing the space and helping set up the ceremony location with some friends. Allyson was in the front room preparing her hair and makeup with the support of close friends. The relaxing afternoon with family and friends began as they arrived in awe of how everything came together.
As dark clouds rolled in, the Beltane ceremony began atop the hill with an intimate feel within such a vast space. Allyson and Justin exchanged vows amongst a few rituals throughout this ceremony. As they received smirks and soft tears from each other, they exchanged rings with handfasting and jumped the broom shortly after their first kiss. They excitedly laughed together walking towards the maypole as their friends and family joined them. (The maypole is typically in the middle of an open field with ribbons held by women or girls. There is dancing with a special form of weaving between each other to create a specific pattern. The ribbon gets tighter around the pole creating a beautiful pattern.) Music is being played as laughter and dancing are enjoyed, we reach the end of the ribbon and walk down the hill to enjoy the reception.
The evening slowly faded in as a vegan dinner was served and everyone mingled under the trees. We walked around with Justin and Allyson for some portraits before leaving the wedding, allowing them privacy for the rest of their celebration. Their wedding was incredibly special and we were so grateful to document every moment. Your wedding doesn’t have to be like anyone else and this is proof that you can truly make your day authentically represent you.
